DESCRIPTION:Denna dokumentär handlar om ett minoritetsfolk\, Sama Dilaut eller Sama-Badjau\, som bor vid Sabah och Tawi-Tawis stränder i södra Filippinerna. Bland gemene filippinare har de ofta kallats havets ”zigenare” och de har bott nomadiskt i sina husbåtar och i århundranden kunnat livnära sig i småskalig och självhushållande riktning på Sulu Havets resurser. På senare år har dock en kombination av omständigheter – väpnad konflikt och förföljelser\, miljöförstöring samt omfattande och aggressivare kommersiellt fiske – alltmer urholkat deras kultur och traditionella hem. Ödesdigert har Sama-folket tvingats flytta närmare kusten till de närliggande öarna. De börjar inse hur intimt nära kultur och klimatförändring hänger samman. Hugo är en av Rhadems tidigaste filmer och handlar om en bul-ul\, en traditionell och ikonisk Ifugao människolik träskulptur från norra öns bergstrakter Cordilleras som länge fascinerat allmänheten i Filippinerna samt olika föreställningar om dess ursprung\, användning och funktion. Under resans gång i jakt efter svar på frågor som dessa föreställningar väckt\, vecklade ut sig helt oväntat nya perspektiv och svar på andra mer komplicerade och omfattande frågor som kommersialiseringen av urfolkskultur såväl som spänningen mellan behov att bevara ett kulturarv och kulturöverföringens inneboende dynamik. \nEn paneldiskussion hålls direkt efter filmvisningarna där regissören Rhadem Musawah\, Sama-danske ekologen Michael Dawila Venning\, svenske antropologen Erik Abrahamsson och PES (Philippine Education Society)\, medverkar. Diskussionen fokuseras på den kritiska relationen mellan klimatförändring och havsbaserade samhällens och kulturernas överlevnad. \n \nRhadem Camlian Morados eller Rhadem Musawah som han tilltalas offentligt tillhör minoritets folk Moro Muslim. Han är såväl dokumentärfilmare som människorättsaktivist i Filippinerna. Idag är han en konsult för ett regionomfattande program för mänskligarättigheter i södra ön Mindanao\, som stöds av den tyska ambassaden i Filippinerna. \nMichael Dawila Venning är en Sama-dansk ekolog med djupa rötter i Sama Dilaut/Badjao kultur och samhälle. Han har arbetat i 8 år med frågor som statslöshet\, tvångsmigration\, urfolksrättigheter och ekologisk konservering. Han är verkställande direktör för Indigenous Communities Learning Center (ICLC) på Sibutoön\, Tawi-tawi södra Filippinerna. \nErik Abrahamsson är en svensk antropolog\, författare och fotograf som på nära håll forskat kring urfolkskulturer\, maritima livsstilar och human evolution. Han har rest i ASEAN regionen och studerat havsbaserade samhällen och kulturer i Malaysien och Filippinerna. \nPhilippine Education Society (PES) är en ideell organisation i Sverige som främjar utbildning för filippinare i Sverige och Filippinerna. PES stöder bla projektet Bahay Tuluyan som hjälper och skyddar gatubarn i Manila\, Filippinerna.  \nTis 19/9 kl 19-21:30. An Ethnolinguistic Group that dwelled on houseboats for hundreds of years moving across the Sulu Sea. They are nomads\, sea gypsies and their life blood is the sea. Forced to surrender their sea dwelling life due to armed conflict\, environmental degradation\, and the rise of commercial fishing\, the Sama Dilaut\, also known as the Sama-Badjau\, dispersed and migrated into the shorelines of the nearby islands. \nAs the Sama hold tightly on their traditions and livelihood\, they are left displaced and alienated from other communities with no certainty of their etsurvival. The Sama Dilaut live day by day to survive\, focusing on one problem alone- to have one meal for the day. \nBut the real danger that threatens their very existence is unfamiliar to them. It’s climate change. \nYet another documentary (45 min) by Musawah\, Hugô: A Hidden Past Revealed\, will be screened. The film is about a bul-ul\, a traditional and iconic Ifugao human-like wood carving from the northern mountains of the Philippines\, and the various claims about its origin\, use\, and function. The documentary was born upon witnessing a traditional thanksgiving ritual in the Cordillera Region\, where the bul-ul is used by Ifugao tribes as a conduit to invoke the presence of ancestral spirits to grace their ceremonies. Most Filipinos and foreign enthusiasts have been taught that the figurine was a rice god and have seen it on display mostly as an antique and/or art object. An informal chat with a young mombaki (an Ifugao spiritual leader) prompted the team to go on a quest to learn more about the cultural artifact. This endeavor led them to Ifugao Province\, Benguet\, and Metro Manila\, where they met with and interviewed resource persons on Ifugao culture. Along the way\, the many faces of the bul-ul were revealed\, inadvertently unmasking\, among others\, issues about the commodification of culture\, as well as the tension between the need for heritage preservation and the inherently evolving nature of cultural transmission. \nAfter the screenings follows a critical paneldiscussion on how climate change and indigenous sea cultures and communities intersect in Tawi-tawi\, Southern Philippines. The panel includes the film director Rhadem Musawah\, the Sama-Danish ecologist Michael Dawila Venning\, the Swedish anthropologist Erik Abrahamsson and the Philippine Education Society (PES). \nRhadem Camlian Morados\, publicly known as Rhadem Musawah is an Indigenous Moro Muslim Documentary Filmmaker and Human Rights Defender in the Philippines. Currently\, he is a consultant leading the Mindanao-wide Human Rights programs of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Philippines. \nMichael Dawila Venning is a Sama-Danish Ecologist with deep ties to the Sama Dilaut/Badjao communities. Working with the issue of statelessness\, forced migration and indigenous rights for 8 years\, and now seeking to combine indigenous rights and ecological conservation. He is currently the executive director of the indigenous Communities Learning Center (ICLC) based in Sibutu Island\, Tawi-tawi\, Philippines. \nErik Abrahamsson is a Swedish Anthropologist\, writer and photographer with close studies on Indigenous cultures\, maritime lifestyles\, and human evolution. He has traveled the ASEAN Region and studied cases of the sea communities in Malaysia and the Philippines. \nThe Philippine Education Society (PES) is a non-profit organisation promoting education for Filipinos in the Philippines and in Sweden. The PES supports projects with the Bahay Tuluyan\, aiming to help and respond to abuse and exploitation of street children in Manila. \n
