Mecenaten är ett svenskt psykologiskt drama som utforskar lockelsen i att kliva in i ett annat liv. Filmen följer en städerska som börjar fantisera om en mer meningsfull och upphöjd tillvaro. Det som inledningsvis framstår som en oskyldig förskjutning får gradvis större betydelse, där frågor om klass, begär och självskapande träder fram.
